Ingredients

- 3 pounds russet or Yukon Gold potatoes
- 2 cups heavy cream
- 3 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 medium onion, finely chopped
- 2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese
- Salt, to taste
- Pepper, to taste
- A pinch of nutmeg (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Peel and slice potatoes thinly, about 1/8 inch thick.
- In a saucepan, melt butter over medium heat, add onion and garlic, sauté for 3-4 minutes.
- Pour in cream, add salt, pepper, and nutmeg, and let it simmer for about 5 minutes.
- In a baking dish, layer sliced potatoes, drizzle cream sauce, and sprinkle cheese. Repeat layers until all ingredients are used.
- Cover with foil and bake for 45 minutes, then uncover and bake for another 20-25 minutes until golden and bubbly.
- Let cool for a few minutes before serving.
Notes
For added flavor, try mixing in fresh herbs or different cheese varieties. You can also layer in sautéed veggies or crumbled bacon for a twist.
