- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 1 cup unsalted butter, room temperature
- 1 ½ cups granulated sugar
- 1 large egg
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- ¼ teaspoon almond extract
- Food coloring (red and blue)
- Sprinkles (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×13 inch pan, lining it with parchment paper.
- Mix the flour, baking powder, and salt in a bowl until combined.
- Cream the butter and sugar together until light and fluffy, about 3-4 minutes.
- Add the egg, vanilla extract, and almond extract and mix until smooth.
- Combine the wet and dry mixtures until just incorporated.
- Separate the dough into three bowls and add red food coloring to one, blue to another, and leave one uncolored.
- Layer the dough in the pan: white on the bottom, red in the middle, and blue on top.
- Bake for 20-25 minutes or until edges are golden.
- Cool in the pan for 15 minutes before transferring to a wire rack.
- Frost with your choice of frosting and sprinkle on decorations before slicing into squares.
Notes
For a gluten-free option, substitute the all-purpose flour with a gluten-free blend containing xanthan gum. You can use coconut oil for a dairy-free version, and applesauce can replace the egg for a vegan alternative.
