This homemade apple butter is fall in a jar—rich, spiced, and ridiculously easy to make. With just apples, warm spices, and your slow cooker, you’ll have a smooth, deeply flavored spread that’s perfect on toast, biscuits, or even straight off the spoon. No canning required—just let it cook low and slow.
Ingredients
5 lbs apples (Gala or any variety), peeled, cored, and chopped
1 cup brown sugar, packed
1 tbsp ground cinnamon
½ tsp ground nutmeg
¼ tsp ground cloves
2 dashes salt
Instructions
Load the slow cooker: Add chopped apples to your slow cooker. Sprinkle over brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and salt. Stir to coat.
Cook: Cover and cook on LOW for 10 hours, stirring occasionally, until apples are very soft and dark.
Blend: Use an immersion blender (or transfer to a blender) to puree until silky smooth.
Thicken (optional): For thicker apple butter, cook uncovered for 1–2 more hours, stirring occasionally.
Store: Let cool, then store in jars or airtight containers. Keep refrigerated for up to 2 weeks or freeze for longer storage.
