Southern Fried Chicken & Waffles

  • Author: Emily Walker
  • Total Time: 45 minutes (plus marinating)
  • Yield: 4 1x

Ingredients

Scale

For the Fried Chicken:

4 boneless, skinless chicken thighs (or breasts)

1 cup buttermilk

1 tsp salt

1 tsp black pepper

1 tsp garlic powder

1 tsp paprika

1 tsp cayenne pepper (optional)

1½ cups all-purpose flour

½ cup cornstarch

Oil for frying (vegetable or canola)

For the Waffles:

2 cups all-purpose flour

2 tbsp sugar

1 tbsp baking powder

½ tsp salt

2 large eggs

1¾ cups milk

⅓ cup melted butter

1 tsp vanilla extract

For the Spicy Honey Butter Sauce:

½ cup honey (or maple syrup)

4 tbsp melted butter

12 tsp hot sauce (to taste)

Pinch of cayenne (optional)

Instructions

1. Marinate the Chicken:
Mix buttermilk with salt, pepper, garlic, paprika, and cayenne. Add chicken and marinate at least 30 minutes (overnight is best).

2. Fry the Chicken:
Mix flour and cornstarch in a bowl. Dredge chicken in the dry mix, pressing to coat. Fry in hot oil (medium-high) for 5–7 minutes per side until golden and cooked through. Let rest on paper towels.

3. Make the Waffles:
Whisk dry ingredients in one bowl and wet ingredients in another. Combine and mix just until blended. Cook in a hot waffle iron until crisp and golden.

4. Whisk the Sauce:
Mix honey, melted butter, hot sauce, and cayenne in a small bowl. Adjust heat to your liking.

5. Serve:
Top each waffle with a piece of fried chicken and drizzle generously with spicy honey butter. Serve hot and enjoy every bite!
