Description
A delightful brunch dish combining the flavors of caramel, apples, and cinnamon in a baked French toast casserole, perfect for gatherings or lazy weekends.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 loaf of crusty bread (French or Italian)
- 6 large eggs
- 2 cups whole milk
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 1 cup packed brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
- 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
- A pinch of salt
- 3 cups diced apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp)
- 1 cup caramel sauce
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Slice the crusty bread into 1-inch cubes and let them sit on a baking sheet to get a little stale.
- In a large bowl, combine the eggs, milk, heavy cream, brown sugar, cinnamon, vanilla extract, and salt. Whisk until smooth.
- Melt a tablespoon of butter in a skillet and add the diced apples. Cook for 5-7 minutes until soft, adding cinnamon and brown sugar.
- Layer half of the bread cubes in a greased baking dish, followed by half of the caramelized apples, then drizzle with caramel sauce. Repeat with remaining bread and apples, finishing with another drizzle of caramel.
- Let the bake rest for 20-30 minutes to soak in the custard.
- Bake for 45-55 minutes, or until puffed and golden brown. Cover with foil if browning too quickly.
- Cool for 10 minutes before serving, drizzled with additional caramel sauce.
Notes
You can prepare this dish the night before and bake it in the morning. Use stale bread for best results. Try adding chocolate chips or pumpkin puree for variations.
